Collage as Celebration - Nancy Hoogstad and 750 Years of Schiedam
To mark the 750th anniversary of Schiedam, artist and curator Nancy Hoogstad presents work that reflects on human connection and identity. Her collages invite viewers to explore life in all its complexity—its beauty and absurdity, its joy and sorrow—through carefully assembled fragments that together form a greater whole.
For Nancy, collage is more than a visual composition; it is a metaphor for life itself. Her work explores how we relate to one another and to ourselves.
Everything is connected—whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
Drawing from personal experience, she explores themes such as societal expectations, human relationships, and the emotional layers of joy and grief.
Her visual language is layered and rich in storytelling. Each collage becomes a narrative—partly personal, partly universal—inviting viewers to find their own meaning and associations. Central to her work is the complexity of identity: how it is shaped over time, across generations, and through shared stories. Her art is a reminder that every individual life contributes to the collective whole, just like each fragment in a collage.
Nancy Hoogstad was born on 17 September 1974 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
She is an active member of KunstWerkt and a member of The Collage Club.
In addition to her sculptures in marble, she also loves to create collages.
